Security patches should be applied promptly after their release. We recommend installing minor updates at least once a quarter; for major releases (e.g., from TYPO3 12 to 13), we will work with you to schedule them during an appropriate maintenance window. If you use our maintenance and support services, we typically handle the update within 24 hours of a new minor update being released.
Why an Update Makes Sense
TYPO3 has been our CMS of choice for many years and is used in most of our projects. Why? Because even after more than 20 years, it still impresses us across the board.
TYPO3 Roadmap
Generally speaking, the release cycle—or life cycle—of TYPO3 versions consists of three phases:
A new TYPO3 version is released every 18 months. This version receives official security and maintenance updates for at least three years. Security patches promptly address newly discovered vulnerabilities. This ensures that the current website can remain operational for at least three years.
Once support for an LTS version expires, the phase of paid Extended Long-Term Support (ELTS) begins. An ELTS license for the system merely maintains the status quo of the installation in terms of security and compatibility but no longer provides any further developments.
Why upgrade?
If you are planning a Long-Term Support (LTS) upgrade without modifying the design, this is referred to as a TYPO3 upgrade.
A TYPO3 upgrade involves updating your website on a purely technical basis: As part of a TYPO3 upgrade, the underlying core is updated to the desired major version (e.g., from 11.5 LTS to 12.4 LTS), and the extensions used and their associated code are updated. In contrast, a pure TYPO3 update involves only replacing the core within a single release cycle, e.g., from 11.5.20 to 11.5.21. A relaunch also includes a visual redesign.
Due to the regular LTS release cycle for TYPO3 versions, a TYPO3 upgrade to the next higher version is generally necessary every three years. The current TYPO3 version can be extended by three additional years through Extended Long-Term Support (ELTS). However, it is important to note that the larger the version jump, the greater the effort required.
An upgrade project is not only necessary at regular intervals but can also be time-consuming and complex. In particular, if, for example, the underlying PHP version is no longer supported, an upgrade of the entire system is strongly recommended for security reasons. For example, TYPO3 10.4 is only compatible with PHP 7.4, which will no longer receive security patches as of December 2022 (End of Life).

Frequently Asked Questions About the TYPO3 Update Service
-
How often should TYPO3 be updated?
-
What happens to my content and data during the update?
Before every update, we create a complete backup of the database and file system. Your content remains intact—we first test the update in a staging environment before going live.
-
How long does a TYPO3 update take?
A minor update is usually completed within a few hours. For a major upgrade to a new major version, you should plan for several days, depending on the project size and the extensions used.
-
Do you also support upgrades to a new major version of TYPO3?
Yes, major TYPO3 upgrades (e.g., from v12 to v13) are among our core competencies. We first analyze all installed extensions for compatibility, perform the upgrade, and thoroughly test the results.
