An overview of the most exciting changes and new features.

With its latest version, TYPO3 v12, the TYPO3 CMS is shifting into high gear and impresses with many new and improved features. Among other things, the release includes a performance upgrade as well as new and streamlined backend extensions with an improved user interface. The update is therefore a valuable addition not only for developers but also for editors and backend users.

Productivity Boost

Improvements to the context menu and file and folder management, as well as more efficient communication between components, make editors' day-to-day work with the system considerably easier.

Automation

The new feature called "Reactions" allows you to configure TYPO3 to respond to incoming webhook calls. Reactions go hand in hand with outgoing "webhooks," such as those used to notify external systems of changes.

Simpler Backend

The TYPO3 backend has a more modern, streamlined, and intuitive design. This allows backend users to manage the website's content with fewer clicks. It makes working with the CMS even more enjoyable!

New File Browser

In addition to a modern tile view, the "File List" backend module finally offers a drag-and-drop feature that now also works between the content area and the file/folder tree.

We'd like to take this opportunity to go into a little more detail about some of the highlights of the new version:

Improved editing environment

  • New thumbnails in the file list for quick access to actions such as editing metadata, viewing images, and deleting files.
  • Easily drag and drop files and items from one folder to another using the CTRL key.
  • Easier management of folder structures (creating, accessing, etc.) through improved context menus
  • Improved search function for editors in the backend
  • More flexible configuration of the editorial environment through a new feature in the user Tsconfig

New Security Features

Compliance with the latest IT and security standards is a top priority for all companies and organizations. The further development of TYPO3 therefore places a strong emphasis on IT security and data protection, and the new version, v12, offers numerous new features, including new standard password policies, security headers, and a customizable retention period for deleted files.

Other new features:

  • Support for Content Security Policies (CSP) for both the backend and the frontend to provide an additional layer of security for detecting and defending against cross-site scripting and data injection attacks.
  • Introduction of a Password Policy Validator component to verify passwords against configurable password policies
  • New password policies to ensure compliance with standards
  • Protection of the CMS and its users by adding new standard security headers in the backend
  • Setting a retention period for deleted records to comply with retention policies and to facilitate the recovery of recently deleted records

Higher performance with shorter development times
