Romäus – The Immortal Rebel: Villingen's Local Hero as a Free Browser Game

In addition to TYPO3 projects and AI extensions, NET.THINKS also creates something completely different: a free browser game about Villingen's most famous local hero. „Romäus – The Immortal Rebel" tells the story of the mercenary Remigius „Romäus" Mans in eight playable stages – directly in the browser, no download, no account, no tracking.

Who was Romäus?

Remigius “Romäus" Mans was a mercenary from Villingen and is still regarded as a symbol of the defiant citizen spirit of Villingen – the Romäus Tower of the old city wall bears his name. He fell in the battle of Novara in 1513. Legends surround his figure: As a giant, he is said to have simply lifted the city gates of hated Rottweil off their hinges.

Eight Stations – from the Tavern to Novara

The game takes you through eight chapters of his life: from the tavern brawl in Riet to the appearance before the council and the escape from the Michael Tower, through the legendary gates of Rottweil to the service as a mercenary and the fall at Novara in 1513. It runs on mobile, tablet, and PC – simply in the browser, without installation.

Legend and History – cleanly separated

Where the legend exaggerates, the game arranges the documented historical core. For each station, it unlocks entries from an encyclopedia and an interactive timeline – thus it conveys the history of Villingen around 1500 while playing. The foundations come, among other things, from publications of the History and Local Heritage Association Villingen.

Built with AI – as a single HTML file

It was inspired by the AI-built tower defense game 1809.fun about the Tyrolean Freedom Struggle. Technically, Romäus is intentionally lightweight: a single static HTML file, without a build step and without dependencies. The game graphics are programmatically generated (Canvas), and the image and video material was created partly with AI tools – the game makes this transparent.

It is and will remain free: no download, no user account, no tracking. The game state is stored only locally in the browser. A non-commercial fan and educational project.
